How can I optimize my graphics card, monitor,etc for netplay

Hey I'm super new to netplay and bad with computers. I have a relatively slow monitor but I assume a decent video card and newly built desktop. I'm noticing a lot of lag just through the emulator and not even online. Do I need to somehow push my graphics card harder or is my monitor outdated, I think its 4 or 5 years old. Just need a link or guide or some insight on this,
