When you can dispute a match
The Site Rules make it very clear when a dispute can be issued, make sure you are well aware of what the site rules include and what kind of behavior they protect you from. Here is a section that provides a basic understanding of disputes, but to be sure you will need to reference the site rules which covers the ranked match rules in detail.
The site rules explain:
- Stage rules
- Responses and how to communicate
- Computer issues
- Pausing mid-match
- Many different forms of cheating
- Stalling
- Timeouts
- Miis and what setups are accepted
- Going AFK for more than 10 minutes
- A more detail section about disputes
You may dispute a match if any of the aforementioned rules of ranked matches were broken by your opponent without good reason. Please also be aware of what is stated in the Lag / Latency Issues section of the Site Rules.
You CANNOT submit a valid dispute if you:
- Did not like your opponent’s choice of character
- Lost the match and don’t want to take the loss
- Were not as good as your opponent
- Did not like your opponent’s playstyle
- Decided the match was too laggy after the first game (unless both players agreed)
Some disputes can be settled just by what moderators can see in the chat, but in other cases proof may be needed to settle a dispute accurately. It is better to be safe than sorry, so providing as much proof as possible is recommended, with a full video of the match being the best proof possible.
Remember: You cannot cancel a match due to lag after the start of the first game unless both players agree. Please always do a lag test.
What to do if your opponent tries to dispute/cancel:
-
You may be able to talk your opponent into continuing the set, which would be ideal. However, this does not mean there should be any hostility. If the match cannot be continued peacefully, a dispute is necessary.
-
If you would also like to cancel the match, you may agree to cancel and neither player will gain or lose points. The match will also not appear in your Match History.
-
If you believe your opponent has violated any of the site rules pertaining to ranked matches (including foul language, bad manners and going AFK for more than 10 minutes) or is trying to dispute/cancel unjustly, you may dispute the match.
If you have not yet begun playing the set, you or your opponent may choose to cancel. A quick apology and a goodbye here are more than enough to sort everything out. If you have begun playing your games you are entitled to play the set out to its fullest, and reap the rewards (or losses) at the end of it; so if your opponent tries to dispute or cancel mid-set it is important you know what to do.
I have decided to dispute a match, what now?
Below is a screenshot of what your match screen will look like when a match is disputed. Click Dispute, fill in the text field with as much detail as possible and then click Update Dispute Reason. Once you have done this you are free to leave the match by clicking the [X] button in the top right of the window and carry on with your business.
Now that your match is disputed, you may notice you have a new tab near the top of the screen labelled "Disputes" where you can review your disputed match, change your decision or edit your dispute reason. Moderators actively handle disputes and will eventually reach yours in their queue, where they will review the evidence you provide (ideally submitted as a link in the Dispute Reason field), the given dispute reasons from both players and the match chat.
Note: You are free to click the Cancel button if you wish to cancel the match, meaning your match will not be reviewed by moderators.
