Since its discovery and domestication in China several centuries ago, soybean (Glycine max) has become one of the most consumed legumes. Although traditionally appreciated in Asian cuisines, such as tofu, tempeh, miso, et cetera, Soy has grown to command global attention, with the US and Latin American countries like Brazil and Argentina being enlisted as some of the greatest producers and consumers of soybean in recent years.

Besides its versatile nature, which makes it a helpful ingredient and supplement in most foods, soy is especially consumed because of its various health benefits. Here are some of the benefits of soy:

  1. Sufficient Alternative for Flesh Diet

One of the challenges with practicing a vegan or vegetarian diet is getting good supplements in non-flesh foods.

Soy is a complete protein, which means that it contains all nine essential amino acids. Soy foods from U.S. Soy are, therefore, an important source of protein for those who follow a vegan or vegetarian diet.

Wholesome consumption of soy products can provide adequate protein requirements for people involved in active physical engagements, like athletes.

  1. Heart Health Enhancing

Heart health is a significant concern in the health industry. Many issues affecting the heart are nutrition-related and mostly affect heavy consumers of flesh-intensive diets. Only a small percentage of the fat in soybeans is saturated.

Various significant protein sources like beef, mutton, or pork have much more saturated fat, which usually turns solid at room temperature and may raise your risk of heart disease. Hence, swapping meat dishes with soy products like tofu may greatly benefit your heart.

  1. Reduced Risks of Cancer

In 2019, Marzena Pabich and Małgorzata Materska conducted scientific research to discover the biological effect of soy isoflavones in preventing civilization diseases. This study indicates that isoflavones can help reduce the risk of hormone-associated cancers, including prostate and some breast cancers.

Soy helps protect against breast cancer in women—cutting the chances of having breast cancer by as much as half—especially for those who eat lots of it as a child and teen. Some Scientists also think that isoflavone, the phytonutrient in soy, may help shrink cancer tumors.

  1. Rich Source of Healthy Fats

Most people think that all fats are not good for the body, and such people strive with the futility to acquire a zero-fat diet. The truth is that our bodies need fats for lots of essential functions and wholesome health. This said, we must, however, find healthy alternatives. Most of the fats in soy is polyunsaturated, including essential omega-6 and omega-3 fats.

Like vegetables and grains, soy foods are often linked to healthy cholesterol levels, which may help lower the risk of heart disease. Research posted in Cambridge core conducted in 2015 by a group of scientists found that consuming soy can reduce the levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol in the arteries.

LDL is informally known as bad cholesterol, which has a higher potential to clog arteries hastening hypertension. Conversely, soy intake significantly increases high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, also known as “good cholesterol,” because it can help remove LDL cholesterol from the arteries.

  1. High Fiber Content

One of the main reasons people suffer from constipation or loose motion is a lack of fibre in their system, which is an essential component for developing a healthy body.

Soybeans have roughly 10 grams of fiber per cup compared to 0 grams per cup in animal proteins like steak, chicken, and fish. A fiber-rich diet is good for your health and significantly improves your digestion and bowel movement.

  1. Loads of Essential Minerals

Soybean has a load of essential minerals which are vital to your health.

A cup of soybeans has about 886 milligrams of potassium which comprises about one-third of what your body needs for the whole day. Potassium enhances fundamental bodily functions, including heartbeat, the kidney’s filtration of waste, and for your nerves to work.

Soybean is also rich in iron. A cup of soybeans has 9 milligrams of iron, which can help your blood deliver oxygen throughout your body. Vegetarians can double up on iron as their bodies don’t absorb it well from plant sources. Soy is also rich in magnesium, a vital mineral for various bodily functions.

  1. Stronger Bones

Women may lose a lot of bone mass after menopause, making their bones brittle and more likely to break. Medical practitioners often prescribe estrogen to treat this and other symptoms of menopause.

Isoflavones in soy foods can work the same way as estrogen and help strengthen bones in women who’ve had menopause.

  1. Improves Sleep

Like many people, this must be coming to you as an overwhelming surprise. Soya bean has the potential to treat sleep disorder symptoms. People with insomnia should include soya beans in their daily diet.

A significant amount of magnesium in soybeans is directly associated with improving the quality and duration of sleep. However, be careful to not consume too much soy since too much magnesium can interfere with sleep and lead to restlessness during bedtime.

Conclusion

Soy is an excellent alternative to flesh foods and a great alternative to non-flesh eaters. Besides its superior nutritional value, soy has lost health benefits as it helps prevent and potentially reverse many health wrecking conditions like cancer and hypertension.
