Hello everyone!
My name is LuiiD and I've just started to play melee with a friend for some weeks now. Important to mention is that I only played Smash 4 before that.
This is just a really brief post about me starting to play this game with a noncasual ambition.
Firstly, melee is more diffucult but at the same time more fun and free than Smash 4. It has multiple layers to it and techniques that need to be understood and mastered properly.
Neutral game to edgeguarding from short-hoping to ledgedashing but also from DI-ing to spacing, this game has a whole new world to explore.
I'm happy to delve into it and to write about my experiences and my challanges with the game.
After testing and playing a lot, I found three characters that seem to fit my style of playing: Luigi, Marth and Falco.
What I love about Luigi is that he can be everywhere and that he is really fun to play as a whole. His combo game and his wavedashes are top notch and make for fun matches.
Marth in comparison plays a bit different. He really excells in having a strong range and reach.
His counter and his side B recovery enables me to play another type of game with a more denfensive approach.
Falco is what I consider a character that as my friend said: "an beginner friendly character, in the way that can easily do what you want from him".
Of course there are complex techs and tricks to master, but with a first aproach to the game he really is accessible to anyone.
Tips to finding a main:
1. Play every character once and look at their moveset ( that helps to get to know the other characters aswell)
2. Try to find out what kind of player you want to be ( Do I want to play in their face? Do I like to wait for mistakes and punish? Do I like to move fast and like to chase them everywhere?)
3. Learn the basic techs that every char can do ( I recommend Third Chairs "2017 Melee General Techs Guide", https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=905nBxupahY)
This will help you choose a char that you have more interest in.
4. Just play with that character and get to know them inside out.
But it's not only about finding a main but also to change habits and having knowledge about certain things. That's why I also recommend this:

Lastly, I wanna say that I do believe that we should aspire to be players that can also play with other chars near the same level as our mains ( It's possible look at plup)
but following these steps makes for a good introduction to the game and its roster.
Thanks for reading my post and see ya next time
