New to Anther's Ladder, need help.

I've heard about Anther's Ladder here and there but finally decided to try it out. I seriously intend on improving my Sm4sh game but need help on how this website works exactly. I can't for the life of me figure out how to play ranked and no one seems to accept my friendlies challenges. I saw a video how to use Anther's Ladder but it seemed a bit outdated. I just need some sort of guidance to help me get started properly. I really want to get into Smash Ladder since For Glory was a bit too toxic for my taste. I'm also a bit nervous so I feel hesitate joining other people's games.
